Stopping Vertigo Attacks

Random Vertigo attacks are generally the biggest fear and cause of anxiety for Menieres sufferers. Here are some suggested measures to help you control them.

Emergency Measures

Most people generally get a short warning when a vertigo attack is imminent.

What has proved to be very effective in stopping a vertigo attack dead in it’s tracks is by taking valium (diazepam) immediately you feel a vertigo attack coming on.

The dosage Menieres people take is between 2 mg and 5 mg and the valium must be prescribed to you by your Doctor.

It’s important to state that valium should be carried around with you but taken as an emergency measure only when an attack is imminent.

However many doctors will not prescribe valium to Menieres patients as when taken regularly in a daily dosage you can develop a dependency on it.

Try and find a doctor who will be willing to prescribe it for emergency use only, Menieres patient feedback has much anecdotal evidence of it being successful.

SERC (Betahistine Dihydrochloride)

If you are regularly having vertigo attacks it’s also worth trying as an initial straightforward first step to get your Doctor or ENT Consultant to prescribe you SERC (Betahistine Dihydrochloride) which is generally the defacto first treatment for those in the UK and many other countries but is not an approved treatment in the US. This can sometimes bring your vertigo quickly under control.

The minimum dosage to be successful is 16 mg taken 3 times per day. If vertigo continues ENT Consultants are increasingly finding success by significantly increasing the dosage to many times that.

For example this study which has successfully trialed people on up to 480 mg of betahistine per day and found they have done well on it. Click here to read the study.

SERC isn’t generally available in the US as the FDA has not approved it for Menieres treatment however our members if they want it tend to obtain it from a compound chemist though you would still need to ask your doctor for a prescription. Others in the US get it also by ordering directly from Canada.

More Strategic Measures

Vertigo attacks generally tend to come in clusters, it’s unusual to just get a single one on it’s own.

This is thought to be because inflammation levels are up in your body and your endolymphatic sac in your inner ear has also become inflamed.

This is also thought to be a period when hearing damage is most likely to occur with Menieres.

It is therefore vital to quickly address any potential inflammation drivers fired off by your immune system.

Hence you need to lockdown quickly on all potential inflammation drivers until you get to a point where you see some relief. This could involve the following :

Diet

Eating largely vegetables with some organic meat with complex carbohydrates, removing dairy, gluten and sugar totally from your diet to try and ensure diet or food allergies are not responsible for your inflammation.

If you are vegetarian or vegan just be aware of the key nutrients you need to supplement which you can’t get from non animal food diets.

Vitamins

It would also be good to increase your intake of key supplements e.g. vit C, vit D3, vit B12, general B vitamins to ensure there is no deficiency there.

Lifestyle

Also focus on lifestyle habits and lockdown on those e.g. sleep patterns, stress management, exercise, outdoors. These lifestyle Fctors are also critical to having a strong and effective immune system.

Anti Virals

There are studies which show virus could be a cause of inflammation in Menieres. If you are not already taking some natural antivirals it might be worth considering.

A combination of some of the following might help support your immune system by reducing your viral load. All easily available to purchase on line or in health food shops :

Quercetin + zinc

Increased dosages of vitamin C

Lysine

Liquorice root

Chinese Skullcap (Scutellaria)

Garlic

Elderberry

Tumeric

Ginger

All of the above have been generally found to help in many cases and would hopefully get your inflammation back down to normal levels such that your vertigo attacks could be eliminated or significantly reduced so you can then return to normal living.

If not then you need to consult your medical practitioner quickly and ask for more intensive treatment measures.

If you have doubts about any of the above being suitable for you then you need to consult your doctor for specific guidance tailored to your own circumstances.
